Pimples are frequently a part of being a teenager. Many teens in Jupiter, FL get acne breakouts, and often, they don’t need professional medical treatment. However, in some cases, a dermatologist can help address the pimples and reveal a clear face and more confident young adult. If you’ve noticed the following, it might be time for professional help:
  • The acne is severe. An occasional pimple is normal, but if the acne is widespread across the face, a dermatologist can help get it under control.
  • Over-the-counter treatments don’t help. For many teens, being consistent with cleansing the face and using non-prescription topical treatment that can be purchased over the counter will help improve acne after consistent use for several weeks. However, if your child has been using this treatment for several months with no improvement, you may need expert help.
  • The acne appeared after a change in medication. Some medications, especially those for anxiety and depression, can cause acne or similar symptoms. If the acne appeared or intensified after beginning or changing a prescription, talk to your dermatologist or physician to see if there is another drug that might have fewer side effects.
  • You notice scarring. Unfortunately, for some individuals the acne can leave scars. If this begins to happen it’s important to see a dermatologist who can treat both the acne and the scars.
  • The acne begins to affect self-esteem. For teens and adults, the way we look has a big impact on how we feel. If you’ve noticed a change in your teenager’s self-esteem, it might be time to work with a dermatologist to clear the skin.
