What Options Are Available for Treatment of Acne in Jupiter, Florida Area?
Patients in the Jupiter, Florida area who are interested in options for the treatment of acne and acne scarring are welcome to visit our Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Peter A. Vitulli. At A Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, we focus on ensuring patients have choices in how to pursue effective treatment of conditions that are affecting the appearance and health of the body and skin. Acne and acne scarring are common reasons our dermatologist sees patients in the area, and we are proud to offer a variety of ways for patients to combat these concerns.

Acne explained

Acne is an inflammatory condition on the skin that can result in the development of pustules, whiteheads, and blackheads. It can be mild or severe, and though it is often seen on the face, it can be anywhere on the body. The condition is often caused by clogged sebaceous glands on the skin and can carry through the teenage years and well into adulthood. Many patients believe this condition is only is seen in teens, or that the condition is caused by a dirty face or poor diet. However, many of these myths have perpetuated for years and have nothing to do with the condition itself. Patients with acne who have severe cases may also deal with acne scarring, such as divots and marks left behind from large pustules that may remain permanently on the face. Even after patients treat their active acne, they may have these reminders that can still cause them to feel self-conscious about their appearance.

Treatment options for acne and acne scarring

Our dermatologist will assess the patient’s skin and determine the type of acne that is present and how severe it is. Then, once a proper diagnosis has been made, treatment options are discussed. Some of these treatments can be combined together for optimum results.
  • Topical medications – sometimes it is best to treat the condition directly on the skin. This is where topical medications come into play. While there are many over-the-counter products available with medications such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, some of these are not strong enough to target more severe or stubborn forms of acne. We can offer prescription medications that are applied to the skin daily to combat the issue.
  • Oral medications – working from the inside out to treat infection is also an option for our patients to consider. Oral medications are taken daily and can help in controlling the inflammation.
  • Laser therapies – laser and light therapies are available. Dr. Peter A. Vitulli can treat the skin directly with special devices cleared by the FDA for the use of clearing acne. Many of these are done on a regular basis, spaced weeks apart, to achieve the desired results. Laser therapies can also assist in skin resurfacing, which can be extremely beneficial for patients who are dealing with rolling acne scars that are more superficial on the skin’s surface.
  • Microdermabrasion – exfoliating the skin with microdermabrasion can help in reducing the visible acne scarring on the skin and smoothing it to make it less noticeable.
  • Chemical peels – another way to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin is with chemical peels. By mixing a special blend of chemicals together and applying to the treatment area, the skin’s natural healing process is stimulated, and the skin is renewed over the course of time.
  • Dermal fillers – patients with acne scars that are deep and large may want to ask our team about the benefits of using dermal fillers to smooth the skin and reduce their appearance. While not permanent, this is a long-lasting way to address specific scars.
