Symptoms of Acne at A Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery in Jupiter FL Area
As a Board-certified osteopathic dermatologist, Dr. Peter Vitulli has numerous options to prevent and manage acne and associated scarring effectively, including:
  • Topical products
  • Oral medications
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Laser-assisted therapy
Yet, before the best option or combination of options is recommended, Dr. Vitulli must understand your skin and the condition that plagues it. Acne comes in many different forms. Here, Dr. Vitulli describes the symptoms of acne that Jupiter, FL patients at A Center for Dermatology may be suffering from, and these symptoms help to inform the treatment that is most appropriate.

Raised, white or flesh colored bumps

Known as whiteheads, these bumps form when oil and dead skin cells plug up the opening of a pore. So, they’re known medically as “closed comedos” or “closed pores.” Whiteheads may be treated with retinoids or other acne medications, such as a benzoyl peroxide and a topical antibiotic.

Black specks that are darker than the surrounding skin Blackheads are caused by the same oil and dead skin cells that give rise to whiteheads; however, the pore isn’t blocked in this case. Instead, the pore widens and the buildup inside of it reacts with oxygen to create that black discoloration. Known as “open comedos” or “open pores,” recommended treatment may be similar to that of whiteheads. In fact, blackheads and whiteheads may both be present, as well as pimples.

Raised red bumps with white-colored centers

These pimples also produce swelling when the excess oils, skin cells and bacteria become trapped inside of skin pores. The resulting inflammation triggers pimples. Additionally, if the pimple is filled with pus, it’s called a “pustule.” The severity of the pimples varies widely from patient to patient and even outbreak to outbreak. So, Dr. Vitulli will take this into account, as well as the frequency and “stubbornness” of the pimples when determining treatment.

Large, swollen, painful red lumps

Cystic acne and nodules occur when the bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells penetrate deeply into the skin. Due to the invasive nature of these breakouts, your acne may be quite painful or feel tender. Nodules are distinguished from cysts, as they don’t contain pus. So, nodules, are often firmer to the touch than pus-filled cysts. Cystic acne is also associated with scarring, which makes proactive treatment all the more important to prevent scars from forming.

Dr. Vitulli may prescribe a medication that you apply to your skin, along with an antibiotic. Some women may also benefit from hormonal therapy. A Center for Dermatology also offers laser- and light-based therapies, corticosteroid injections, and guidance on skin care for patients who need a little extra support.
