If you are tired of the tedious rotation of shaving, waxing, and tweezing to get rid of excess and unwanted hair, it’s time to learn about laser hair removal in Jupiter, FL. The cosmetic service has become the premier way to eliminate unwanted hair virtually anywhere on the body. After just a few laser hair removal appointments, you will have smooth, silky skin that is free of excessive, embarrassing hair. At A Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery, we have a skilled team that includes experienced providers of laser hair removal.

About Laser Hair Removal

We utilize Selective Photothermolysis or SPTL, one of the newest and most effective technologies available to achieve long term hair reduction. The procedure is designed to drastically reduce hair growth in the desired area for an extended period. For many patients, the results of laser hair removal can last for years.

How it works

Laser hair removal utilizes targeted intense pulses of a specific wavelength, which targets the pigment within the hair. The hair absorbs the laser energy and carries it to the hair follicle. The laser energy destroys the follicle which impedes its growth.

Hair grows in three different phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. The anagen phase is when the hair is active and growing, the catagen phase is a transition, and the telogen phase is when the follicle is resting. Only hair follicles that are in the active or anagen phase respond to laser hair removal. This means that multiple treatments are required to effectively reduce unwanted hair.

Candidates for laser hair removal

Laser hair removal works best on patients with lighter skin and darker hair. The treatment is effective for use on many areas of the body including the face, arms, underarms, back, bikini line, and legs. During your consultation, we can determine if laser hair removal will be effective on your skin. Certain individuals with darker skin may need a small area tested before treatment can be recommended.

Preparing for laser hair removal

Prior to undergoing laser hair removal, patients should limit the amount of plucking or waxing they do for several weeks. This is because the laser targets the roots of the hair which are removed during plucking and waxing. Do not use tanning beds or lay out in the sun for four weeks prior to and after treatment. Laser hair removal is less effective on darker skin and sun exposure can cause complications after treatment. Shaving is recommended the day before the procedure.

What to expect with laser hair removal

Most areas of the body require a 20-30-minute treatment. First, a cold gel is applied to the areas that are to be treated and the laser is adjusted according to the color and thickness of your hair, the location being treated, and the skin color. Both patient and technician will wear proper eye protection. Next, a special device is placed onto the treatment area to deliver the pulses of light. The area will be observed for any signs of reactions before moving forward with the procedure.

The procedure is often described as feeling like a rubber band being snapped against the skin. Certain areas such as the face, underarms, and bikini line tend to be more sensitive. The cooling gel helps minimize pain and heat injury during laser treatments.

When the laser hair removal treatment is over, ice packs, anesthetic gels, and cold water can help ease any discomfort.

Results from laser hair removal

Laser hair removal treatments should be scheduled approximately four to six weeks apart. The actual number of treatments required for your individual situation will be determined during the consultation. Because hair grows in phases, it’s important to stay consistent with your treatments, as it helps us achieve optimal results. At any given time, up to 40 percent of the hair can be in a resting phase. When you stay on schedule, we can treat most of the hair that should have grown after the last treatment.
