Skin Cancer Free Life
There is one word in the English language that is almost guaranteed to strike dread in anyone's heart. When a doctor speaks the word "cancer" it can feel like your heart stops for a second. Millions of Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer annually. Knowing where to turn for help in prevention and skin cancer treatment can be a whirlwind of confusion. A Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery offers patients a skin cancer specialist, Dr. Peter Vitulli. What makes Dr. Vitulli so unique is his education involved not just dermatology as a specialty but also osteopathic medicine, giving him a unique way of helping his patients prevent and treat skin cancer.

Facts about skin cancer:

  • This is the most common type of cancer. If it is caught early enough, the number of survivors that hit the 5-year survival mark and beyond are about 98 percent.
  • The risk for skin cancer doubles if they have had more than five blistering sunburns.
  • Regular daily use of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or above can cut your risk for skin cancer almost in half.
  • More than 400,000 cases of skin cancer annually are linked to the use of tanning beds.
  • More people develop skin cancer due to tanning beds than lung cancer cases are linked to smoking.
  • Anyone of any age, ethnicity, or gender is at risk to develop skin cancer. It is estimated that one out of every five people in America will experience skin cancer in their lifetime.
  • Skin cancer can attack even in areas not typically exposed to the sun, such as the palms of the hands, the soles of feet, the pelvic area, and the inside of the mouth.
  • Those with higher risk factors for developing skin cancer include those with skin that burns easily, red or blonde hair, extreme amounts of sun exposure, tanning bed use, those with more than 50 moles, atypical or large moles, and those with a family history of skin cancer.

Types of skin cancer:

Type of Skin Cancer
  • Melanoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Neuroendocrine carcinoma

Skin cancer treatments:

Treatment is dependent on the type of skin cancer that presents. For basal cell carcinoma, treatment can sometimes involve topical medications that work to stimulate the body's immune system to produce interferon which attacks the cancer. Other times, skin cancer can be treated by electrodessication and curettage (EDC). This method is fast and easy. Some skin cancers are treated through surgical excision, which has an extremely high cure rate and allows the specimen to be examined to guarantee all cancer has been removed. Mohs micrographic surgery is an extremely effective and efficient skin cancer treatment. That is because the tissue is instantly evaluated under a microscope. If necessary, further removal is done right then. This process is repeated until no further tumor is visible. Laser surgery can also be utilized to remove the cancerous spot.
